BrowZ our Journals with BrowZine!

BrowZine is our new journal citation finding service! A virtual display case of the electronic journal subscriptions available to you through the library. Type in the journal title and drill down to reach the article you are hunting for. Along the way notice that it has broad topics through which you can BrowZ to discover what we have access to! And if you find something you’d like to be proactive in your knowledge quest by following regularly, you can set up an account to create your own Bookshelf. No more wading through email alerts!

When you set your account, they’ll send a link to an explanatory videoYou can even access the journals on your phone with an app and our remote access service OpenAthens

To find BrowZine while on campus, go to the library’s web-based journals page and check the FAQs page for more information.

How is this different from a database search like MEDLINE through PubMed? BrowZine is a way to get to an article for which you have a citation. MEDLINE is designed for subject searching and includes links to the articles we have that you encounter. Together you have multiple ways to find the information you need.

Goodbye and Hello!

Mary Peters is retiring and Bridget Barry-Thias is the new Medical Library Manager. Welcome, Bridget, and goodbye, Mary!

A time of transitions!

Mary started at Scottish Rite Hospital in 1981 and has lived and worked through huge changes in the information world. From being excited about getting an electric typewriter for the library, to learning word processing as the hospital started getting personal computers. The card catalog has transitioned from index card access into an online version that can link users to not only print but also the full text online.

From huge volumes of the Index Medicus – in print or even microfilm – to almost instant lists of medical literature citations through MEDLINE and CINAHL databases online. Full text books and journal articles provided by libraries to users at home or traveling.  Passwords!

But the publishers still need to be paid - and while much information is available freely on the web today, access to the quality, peer-reviewed information needed by medical clinicians and researchers is still an expensive business requiring evaluation, management and coordination of a number of services. The health science librarian is still here to help manage and provide access to that “knowledge-based” data you need.

Bridget will take us into the next stage – more reliance on electronic access to information needs. The Medical Library will still have print materials, but this past year has been spent evaluating and paring down the physical collection. Soon it will emerge in a refreshed version as it moves further into the world of online access. Please contact Bridget for your information needs!

Clarity Across Languages: The art and science of translating health information

This is an eye-opening article that illustrates the challenges our interpreting staff face daily in providing great communication services to our families and visitors. It provides a look at the behind the scenes work involved in creating the Spanish version of MedlinePlus, MedlinePlus en español, the trusted consumer health resource from the National Library of Medicine. Author Fedora Braverman is team lead for the MedlinePlus en español website.

Set Up Your Own Search Alert Using MyNCBI

If you want to save a PubMed MEDLINE search and get updates you need to set up a MyNCBI account at PubMed. You can customize it so that filters like “review” or “all child” or “published in the last 5 years” always show up to the side of your searches for a quick note of how that changes your results (to actually do that search you need to click the real filters on the left though). If you always sign in before searching, then when you search it will keep your history for 6 months instead of timing out after 8 hours. Warning though – the Clipboard does disappear!

1.   Go to PubMed. If you use your own health science library’s unique address you will see an indicator when you reach an article they have. If you are connected with more than one library, you can add additional filters later on in the process. If you are not on campus the links will not give you full text, but you can use the library's remote access service (ours is OpenAthens) to reach it.

2.   Click on Sign in to NCBI – the link is in the upper right corner. If you are in Chrome it can save your password once you get set up. You’ll see a link to an overview YouTube video on the right and a list of some of the features.

3.   The MyNCBI home page has a number of sections – a place to collect articles on a topic, an area that shows the search alerts you set up, a list of the filters you choose, and a place to gather your own bibliography to easily pass along. There’s a good Help section. You can customize these windows.

4.   Back at NLM's main PubMed page when you have done a search you will see Create alert just below the search box. Clicking that will give you a set up screen. There you can name it and schedule the frequency. Perhaps write yourself a note in the “Any text you want to be added…” area as a reminder if this is for a paper or other specific activity besides general interest.

Just What is an Archive? the POSNA Archive online

Here's an excellent overview of what to expect when you visit an archive. The process involved is common with any collection, no matter the topic. At the hospital we host the POSNA Archive, which is gaining an online presence at POSNA's website under History. Through the dedicated work of hospital staff and POSNA Historical Committee members, the historical video collection posted there is growing.

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is the service we use for "remote access" - when you are away from the main campus you can still reach many of our electronic journals and books. This is a great little video that explains just what the service does. For more information or to request an account contact the library.

OpenAthens address change

The OpenAthens address has changed. Please make a note!

It is now my.openathens.net   (formerly http://auth.athensams.net/my/ )

Wondering what this means? If you are a TSRHC staff member and would like to be able to reach most of our electronic resources away from the main campus, contact the Medical Library to have an account set up.

Fair Use Week 2018!

It’s Fair Use Week 2018! Fair Use balances the rights of a copyright holder with the rights of the public to enjoy and make use of copyrighted materials to promote science, research and the arts – and the rights of libraries to provide information. The National Library of Medicine offers an excellent overview.

Section 107 of the US Copyright Act provides the details of fair use, but the University of Virginia Library nicely summed it up in only seven words: ‘Use fairly. Not too much. Have reasons.’ ”
