Healthy People 2020 Objectives -- Opportunity for Input

Every 10 years, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) sets national objectives for promoting health and preventing disease through a process known as Healthy People 2020. Right now, HHS is in the planning mode for Healthy People 2020. As a national initiative, Healthy People’s success depends on public input.

The draft Healthy People 2020 objectives are now available online. This is your chance for input! You can review the draft objectives and submit comments on the objectives or suggest new ones. Comments will be accepted through December 31, 2009.

STAT!Ref Database of Online Books

Have you discovered that we now have access to a set of about 40 books online? A convenient feature is that the whole set can be searched by topic at one time. You can also look at the list of titles to choose a book and get into it through the table of contents.

To reach STAT!Ref go to the Medical Library’s online catalog page and you will see a link to the collection.

Titles are heavy on nursing but also include Taber’s Medical Dictionary, ICD-9-CM, Merck Manual, Red Book and ACP Pier (a highly rated evidence-based point of care tool). There is also a neat book on cultural diversity that features valuable information on working with a number of different ethnic groups.

Please try to remember to “log off” when you are done since this product is shared.

Librarians Share Selected Websites

Your librarians have created a web-based list of websites, annotated and organized by topic. You can find a link to “Lots of Links” on the Medical Library home page or reach it from home. Topics of special interest include “Foreign language and culture,” “Evidence-based practice” and "Consumer health."

This Web-2.0 resource might be a useful tool for your own collection of web bookmarks. Rather than being dependent on your own computer, if you set up an account in Delicious and add your bookmarks you can reach them anywhere.

You can also search the website itself to see what others have chosen to add to their lists.

Resources for Visitors

Among the many topics included on the Links section of the Medical Library website is a page designed for visitors. It includes tips relating to common questions a long term visitor might have such as how to obtain a copy of our Tachdjian book, lots of links to DFW points of interest and tips on using public transit.
